Titania the witch that goes on the Paul O'Grady show said Halloween was the Pagan new years eve. Everyone has different ideas on this and every site you look up tells you different versions.
No! It was March 1st as used by the Romans.

';The ancient Roman calendar had only ten months and started the year on 1 March, which is still reflected in the names of some months which derive from Latin: September (seventh), October (eighth), November (ninth), December (tenth). Around 713 BC the months of January and February were added to the year, traditionally by the second king, Numa Pompilius. The year used in dates was the consular year, which began on the day when consuls first entered office 鈥?fixed by law at 15 March in 222 BC';

There have been a few other changes since then, but the date of the New Year was changed to 1st January.
i'm not so sure but i've heard that christmas day used to be at 25th April hundreds years ago....

ANNMARIE ARE YOU KIDDING?
That's why it's ';April fools'; because only fools still follow the old calendar.
You mean to tell me April the first isnt the first day of the year. Damn it no wonder i get strange looks when i give out my new year cards.
Aries is the first zodiac sign. The first month of Spring, but in ancient times...The Albanian calendar which is divided into 10 months, and an irregular amount of days. April had 36 days, and was the first month. In the calendar of Romulus, it had 30 days and was the 2nd month. Numas's 12 month calendar assigned April as the 4th month, but, only gave it 29 days. It wasn't until Julius Caesar's reformation of the calendar, that April regained it's 30 days and kept it's position as our fourth month.
I thought it was March 1.
yes in past times people used to consider it
