';the church used to quote the bible to justify slavery'; true or false?

You know the answer. It's yes.But whose credibility you want to destroy, the church or the bible, you can't be against both, because in this case they are against each other.';the church used to quote the bible to justify slavery'; true or false?
Actually it was true of some churches until a hundred years ago. There is not ';the church'; but many different types. Slaves were used by every nation at some time, whether Christian or not. It took many years to teach men that this was wrong and to put a stop to it. They still are used in many parts of the world by non Christians.';the church used to quote the bible to justify slavery'; true or false?
I heard that people have used the Bible to justify slavery before but I haven't ever confirmed it or find a specific case of such a thing occuring.

But I know for sure (ie. it's been recorded) that people have used religion to prevent interracial marriage... Y'know, just like how they use religion in the modern day to try and prevent gay marriage.
Yes dear, the Bible condones slavery, among other niceties...

It also encourages parents to stone their kids to death if they misbehave and it tells nice stories of daughters getting their father drunk to have sex with him. It's a funny weird book. Most people that talk about it all the time never read it actually.
True.

There are many references to slaves in the old testament, and Laws on how to treat slaves.

There are things in the New Testament about slavery. The one that is sticking in my mind is, ';Slaves, obey your masters';, written by Paul.

Really.... you can justify nearly anything you want to using the bible.
Anybody can draw that inference, since there are references to slavery in the Bible and it tells slaves to obey their masters. BUT, like everything historical, one must look at it not the ';now'; glasses, but take it in the context of the time period.
Justify is a little weak.

Recommend comes to mind.

There a section dedicated on how you are allowed to beat your slaves, and how you can beat them to death with out being held at fault.

Also, if you take on an indentured servants, who then marries while they're your slave, when the guys time is up, you get to keep the wife and kids! Score!
True - where there was slavery. I don't know of anyone doing that today. If they are they are living in the mindset of the past. The same book was used to justify the actions of the abolitionists.
If by ';the church';, you mean Catholicism, then false. If by ';the church';, you just mean the average American Christian 200 years ago, then true.
Which church is ';the church';? Christians definitely shouldn't be promoting slavery, but maybe that statement was mixed up when they say we are slaves to sin?
True, but the bible also says to put people to death if they engage in homosexual behaviour.
Good job! You have them scrambling to deny the word of God in the Bible. Exodus 21 tells them exactly how to treat their slaves (and how treat their daughters). Sick!
Cotton is a very important commodity, and back then we didn't have all today's sophisticated machinery.... yo there was no other choice
nobody should be a slave to anything or anyone.. except the bible.
True, but it was also the Church that had allot to do with opposing and bringing down Slavery later.
Not in my church and not in my time.
Some churches did, while others used it to argue against slavery.

What's your point?
True.
T
True
false, the bible says ';nobody should be a slave';
True!!!

I don't get your point ^^
true
False -- because it's men in the Church who don't understand the Bible who might of quoted it...
THE church? I don't doubt that people abuse others in many ways

so I would say true
